Reaching Out

FSA's Youth StoryTroupe's Story Box Project

The idea behind Kevin Cordi's Story Box Project is a simple one — to connect with people's hearts and minds the world over through story. At every destination along its route, stories are shared. Each community explores the gifts already in the Box, then adds its own richness to the treasure trove.

At the Youthful Voices StoryLab on November 18, 2006, our Florida Youth Storytelling Troupe presented Kevin's Story Box in a ceremonial procession accompanied by drums, tambourines, and an Australian didgeridoo. Troupe members Daniel and Adam Carr, Jeremy Evans, Zayven Reese, and Brandon Sainte were then given an exciting opportunity to share in this exchange.

Each was given a simple, empty, unadorned box. They were charged with the mission to collect their own stories and inspire their schoolmates, teachers, families, and friends to add their voices to the project. The troupe members were also asked to make their box a work of art to reflect the treasures inside. They accepted their assignment as Ambassadors of Story with great enthusiasm.

Their individual boxes, overflowing with the creative spirit, will be presented as a very special event at our StoryCamp in March 2007. These boxes will then travel to schools, libraries and festivals throughout the state to inspire others to share themselves through story, to promote dialogue and increase understanding between communities and cultures.

Brandon SilerUnder the direction of Emily Harris, Kim Rivers, and Ann Scroggie, the first FSA Youth Troupe was begun at the November 2006 FSA StoryLab. In 2006, troupe members participated in a special Youth Storytelling Workshop directed by Emily Harris with special guest Mitchell O'Rear of Project Imagination. As part of the workshop, members launched the Florida Story Box Project, a part of the International Story Box Project directed by Kevin Cordi.
